Overview

The myth of progress has been resilient in Western culture. Art relating to machines and computers must contend with these interpretive biases. Utopian and dystopian visions of the ultimate trajectory of technological development are expressed in everything from 19th century fiction to contemporary action adventure video games. Here we will look at the way the progressive aura of technology has been used and subverted in the arts.
